Long term unemployment July 12, 2010

I like a large number of unemployed have been ou of work more than 6 months. For me it has been 1 year and 9 months.

It leads to high levels of stress, health and family issues. I t leads to us loosing our focus and turning desperate which makes finding the right job even worse.

I hear the desperation in the voices of my fellow WIND members each week. I want to help each one of them but at this time all I can give is understanding and moral support.

Now t make matters even worse for all of us Congress has not voted a further extension of benefits and corporate America had decided to further their own problems by not even looking at unemployed candidates who have been out of work more than 6 months.

Where and when will this vicious circle end. The whole world is in a catch 22 situation and every one is afraid to make the first move to get us out of it. This has shown the world and stakeholders just what a lack of leadership there is on all levels.  Where are the companies that can show that they have grown and prospered in this economy. There isn’t any. Instead they have cut to the bare necessities and basically gone into a catatonic state waiting for someone else to solve the problem so they can awaken as some beautiful butterfly. However it is there actions that will awaken them as an ugly moth.

Lets look at economics 101 for us to understand where they have failed miserably.

To make money you have to have a market and sell products.

To sell products you must have people with free cash to buy these products

In order for people to have free cash they must have jobs and a reasonable amount of debt

So the more people employed the more free cash the more sales.

Employed= free cash=sales= profits

So what has corporate America done to destroy this concept?

Minimum employees, minimum production, sold off all assets not currently used, to produce false profits, in order to keep stocks even or increased.

So basically companies are trying to perform dot com bubble economics, we will sell stocks based on air(false profits).

The dot com bubble burst causing a number of companies to disappear. Maybe this is a good thing. Maybe the unemployed should look at this as an opportunity and start a new business that will take the place of the ones that will disappear.

There are a number of highly qualified unemployed people from all levels and aspects of a company. Get out of your slump and start discussing what business you can unite together to start. IF you cannot find employment create it.

Isn’t that what America strong. We need to develop a Phoenix mentality. We are in the ashes and now is the time to rise up stronger and better than we were before we turned to ashes.

I have started the process. I have started my own company. Evolution Career Business Leadership (AKA Evolution CBL) to help you, to help businesses see the error of their ways, to help  leaders develop the skills they need or enhance the ones they have to move America forward once again.

We are American we don’t quit we band together to help each other out and to become stronger. You cannot keep us down! We will rise with even a stronger voice and determination than we had before. Being an American is about perseverance about building and rebuilding, about helping each other our neighbors, our friends, and strangers.

It is time to unite with one voice and tell the nation we are made as hell and will not take it anymore. If we need to do it with our votes the next election then let politicians know they are on the block and the axe is sharpened.

Get out of your slump, get positive get engaged and get going!

I challenge all my fellow unemployed friends and colleagues to make a new America. Start new companies start new businesses struggle if you have to. I know that I am struggling getting my business going but I am determined I am focused and I will not quit. I have been forming allies and I am calling on them to help me. I challenge you to do the same. If you have been cultivating a dream then now is the time to make it happen. Get with other unemployed people who could form a company and figure it out.

I am here to help you.

What is the blackhole and where is this hidden job market June 30, 2010

These two terms are tossed about like confetti at a New York City Parade. It gets you all excited but in the end it is just trash at your feet.

I will try to demystify both these terms for you. Boy have I got my work cut out for me.

The infamous Blackhole of job hunting coming to a theater in 3D!!

This refers to the use of Resume Tracking software programs (RTS) that can be set to scan electronic resumes for keywords(AKA buzzwords) and placing them in categories by percentage of words found. HR can then set it to only deliver those with a very high percentage. What if my resume does not have at least 95% ? Then it is never seen by a human and no human even know you exist or even submitted.

The more sophisticated software packages can even place weighting factors on the buzzwords and give a larger chance of you not being seen by a human.

So how am I to know that my resume was ever read by a human? Well in short you don’t but then the reasoning is a whole new discussion and has been discussed in finite detail on a number of LinkedIn groups. My best answer to your inquiry is to follow up with HR. See my post on HR and recruiters so that you do not to disappointed by lack of professionalism and no replies. Again this has been brought up in many LinkedIn groups as well.

The inhuman part of RTS is that it cannot take into account experience, accomplishments nor potential of candidates. It can only scan for buzzwords and dates. Dates can be used to eliminate older workers, which is why you are told to only include the last 10 years on your resume.

The Hidden Job Market the spy thriller of the century! Available at Amazon, Borders and Barnes and Noble!

You ready for this it is called hidden for a very good reason, because it doesn’t exist! Well not in the sense that you would expect. There are unscrupulous agencies out there that market that they can get you into the hidden job market. Then they take your money and teach you how to job search.

Save your $5,000+ unless you are one of the fools who you and your money are soon parted.

Here it is in a nut shell:

Companies have unfilled positions. They could be unfilled due to budget as it wasn’t funded but they see a future need for it. The position is vacant but currently the company can get by with it not filled. Companies will not advertise these position because they do not need to collect thousands of resume at this time.

This one requires much hard work on your part and while it seem a little humorous I am serious. The company does know that it needs you doing this fantastic job you do. So when you stop laughing please read on!

So a number of you are saying then it is stupid to even waste my time chasing something that doesn’t exist! Great keep that thought the smart one need less competition.

Okay wise guy then how do I find out about these hidden jobs and how do I get one?

First let me say Target Companies(See the post on selecting target companies).

Networking!!!! (Yes once again see my post on this topic)

When you network into your target companies and you finally get to talk to the hiring manager. The hiring manager will now about the positions I stated earlier unfunded or unfilled. Now here is where the hard work comes in……for you to convince the hiring manager what a great job you can do for him and the company if they hire you to do XYZ and what a catastrophe it would be if they didn’t and you went to work for another company. To learn more on techniques for this pick up the book Guerrilla Marketing for the Job Hunter.

So I hope I have added some clarity and humor into your life. If you have taken the time to read this far, you are many steps ahead of those who wander blindly in the job search dessert. I hope that I have added some value in your search and some chuckles to maintain your sanity. I wish you the best if you decide to pursue the hidden market. There is a lot less competition but then it is a lot more work. It is a great reward for those that persevere!

Informational Interviews May 22, 2010

First the name needs to be changed because interview is a turn off. It conveys the appearance that you are asking for a job.

You are asking this person to interrupt their work schedule to help you so be very respective of their time. If you asked for 10 minutes end at 9 minutes unless the person gives you more time. Again be respective of it. Be sure to thank them for their time and generosity if they allowed more time. You may need to call this person again.

Informational meeting would have a better reception or informational inquiry.

The next thing is how you request the meeting.

Why did you choose this person, were they referred to you?

Did you find them in a LinkedIN search?

Do you consider them a knowledge expert in their field?

You need to tell these people how you found them and why they are important in your quest for information.

Interview has a strong tie to jobs so do not use the word in your conversation period!

Don’t get personal in the beginning by asking what did you do to get in the field and this job. They do not know you that well and it is a turn off to get personal immediately.

Ask what are the requirements and skill sets needed to perform the job?

Do they know of any other field that could easily transfer over to their field?

Can they recommend anyone else to talk to?

The last thing is CAN I DO ANYTHING FOR YOU!

Thursday mornings is my usual time to attend a meeting of other “professional detached” people, WIND Networking. I attended the meeting and we talked about the same old stuff. Elevator pitches given by all and suggestions flowed abundantly. I am not saying this is a bad thing it is a major part of the job search cycle.

This is about the meeting I had afterwards with a fellow WIND member who did not attend.

We met at a local Mall, got a bite to eat and sat down to have a discussion about everything and nothing. Just two people talking about what ever popped into our heads. It has to have been the best 4 hours I have spent in recent times.

I left the meeting feeling more relaxed more rejuvenated than I have in awhile.  We have agreed to have more such meetings as we both thoroughly enjoyed it.

So if you have been out of work for some time (both of us have been out longer than a year) set up a meeting with someone to talk about anything and nothing. The only rule is job hunting subjects are not allowed.

Oh as a side note I then spent a fabulous weekend with my youngest son. Where we talked about everything and nothing as well.

Sometimes we are so caught up with our job search we forget that the rest of the world exists. So it is good to just sit down with a friend or colleague and talk about everything and nothing. I strongly suggest that you try it and comment on how it worked for you. After all we need to maintain our sanity too!

Is the market opening up or is it just a blip. April 27, 2010

There are a number of jobs being filled which is good news. But at the same time there are still companies downsizing and going bankrupt. Europe is still struggling to get their economy back in order. China is starting to deal with the issues of their own housing boom and their economy growing at too fast a pace. Soon it will not be cost effective to do business there and hopefully the jobs will come home but I doubt that. I am sure they are eying Viet Nam and other countries as the next cheap labor market.

The other thing to think about is that there are a number of companies that are on the July to June fiscal year. They are coming  into 4th quarter and they have to spend the money in their budgets to keep the same budget next year. They have slots that have been open but not filled. So if they do not fill them now they will loose them for next year or be forced not to fill them again. Then there is the annual 10% turn over from retirements and people leaving.

So at this moment while things are looking up I am apprehensive about saying we have hit bottom and are climbing out.

I do not mean to sound like a pessimist or a doom doctor but we have been bit before by the media and others saying we have turned around. So I will say I am being cautiously optimistic.

What are your feelings?

How do you stay focused and positive after a year? March 24, 2010

Well I have been unencumbered by employment  now for 1 1/2 years.  I have heard of people giving up, I have heard of people changing careers, I have heard of people loosing focus and taking anything, I have heard of people that have gone from focus to the shotgun approach.

They say desperate times call for desperate measures. Do they really? Or is that a cop out statement?

When they talk about people over 40 they always mention career transition like after 40 you have to seek a new career. What was wrong with the one I was in?  It is still around and I still like the work so why do I have to transition?

I might be an enigma. I have worked in the same industry for a number of years. I still have a lot I can contribute. I still have the time to do it also. I really like my industry because it is constantly changing and you get to learn new things all the time. I have worked with some great people and I have worked with some real pain the asses.

I have hired people and I have fired people. It was just part of the job.

They tell you in these times to surround yourself with positive people who will support you. People who have been out this long have a hard time staying focused and being positive.  I have my ups and downs but I try hard to have more ups than I do downs. When you start having a down day it can drag you down fast. You have to be aware and not let that happen.

How do you stay focused? I know  what I want to do. I know that I can do it very effectively. I know there is a position out there for me. I just have to find  it . So I keep looking for it and nothing else.

I know I have hurdles that I have to overcome. Knowing what these are gives me the advantage to address them in positive ways. This allows me to stay focused and up beat because I know that I can jump these hurdles with ease.

Staying positive is hard especially after all this time and then loosing my last 2 extensions because I worked a part time gig for a friend of mine.  I have stopped watching TV there was nothing worth watching anyway except maybe the DIY and NAT GEO channels. Not listening to bad news everyday helps you stay positive. I would get my information online in daily emails from the business journals and the tech wires. This allowed me to be selective on what I read especially if it related to my industry. I could see if my target companies received a contract or bought another company or merged with someone.  It kept me informed with what really mattered.

Getting into discussions and answering questions on LinkedIn helped a lot for me to stay positive because it provides a sense of worth. Especially when you get voted best answer or someone in a discussion gives you kudos for your part.

Writing this blog helps me stay positive as it has been my hope to help others who are job seeking. I have received good feedback from other seekers thanking me for it.

I guess what it really comes down to is the person character. Do they have the discipline to keep themselves focused and upbeat when the world is crumbling around them? Do they have that dogged determination required to go the distance to achieve what they desire or are they going to throw in the towel and take what ever and be miserable until something better comes along?

If you have been unemployed for a year or more please tell me here what you have done and what you do to keep focused and keep going. I would like to know and I am sure it may help others who read this blog.

Whats with Unemployment and Career Centers? March 17, 2010

Here in Massachusetts there is a growing concern about a particular issue. That concern is about your UI benefits and extensions when you hit the one year mark in your endeavor to find gainful employment.

The career centers are encouraging you to find part time and contract work. They will tell you upfront that you can only make X number of dollars over your unemployment before it has an effect on your weekly UI check.

What they neglect to tell you is what effect it will have on your UI benefits if you are still unemployed after a year.

The eligibility amount is $3,500 to get UI benefits. I only worked a 3 week part time gig for a friends company and only made $2,300. When I went to file for my next to last extension I was told I was not eligible due to the fact I only worked 3 weeks in 2009 and did not make sufficient monies to collect. So now I am at zero income and no safety net left.

What others in Massachusetts are finding out is that there benefits are being greatly reduced because of their part time work. I know of a number of people who have gone from the maximum to $94/wk because of part time work. This places a further financial burden on these people and myself. It makes it many times harder for us to job search when we cannot afford gas to travel other than an actual interview. It hampers our ability to network as we cannot afford to buy the contact a simple cup of coffee much less the gas to get there.

So if you are starting or have been on unemployment and are working part time and /or contract I would suggest strongly that you go to your UI office and ask how this will effect your benefits down the road. The job market is going to be slow to recover and many of us will be unemployed or underemployed for years to come.

Volunteer work while unemployed. What does it get me? March 14, 2010

Volunteer work will provide you some benefits that may or may not advance your career.

One it provides a sense of worth that you lost when you lost your job.

It allows you to keep your communication and interaction skills honed for that interview.

Then there is the networking aspect of it as it broadens your network and allows you to meet interesting people.

Depending on the work it can maintain, enhance, or hone your skills. It may add new skills also.

Where do these volunteer opportunities come from?

You can search them out or they may present themselves in chance ways.

My latest work is based on a chance encounter at the local Post Office. It was based on my former volunteer work and the fact that I was wearing an old uniform jacket with  embroidery.

I ran into Al who is running the Ram Island Restoration Project off of Mattapoisett, MA.

The project is to fly dirt out to the island to fill in 2 erosion spots, add planting and make it ready for the nesting season of the Common tern and the Roesetta Tern (endangered). 1/4 of each population nest on this island to breed.

The project uses 3 helicopters to fly the dirt out using mud mats that carry 750lbs of dirt at a time. so it takes many flights. We have moved 650 yards to date.  We have another 3 -4 days hopefully to finish the dirt move.

The pilots requested a water safety aspect in case they go into the water. This is where I come in having performed underwater recovery for 20 years I have the experience to train, plan and execute such an operation.

So my leadership and operation skills are in use once again. The operation provides me a feeling of great worth and responsibility. It has put me back on my game. Something that I have been missing this last  year.

It has also provided me with a new skill — navigation. I navigate us out through a narrow and obstruction avoidance  from the marina to the island and back. I also have to select the anchorage point daily for optimum response.

I hopefully have 3-4 more days of doing this before my part is completed.

This has helped me exercise my leadership skills and get me back on game.

I hope that all those volunteering are finding it helpful. To those who are thinking about it I hope this gives you that push to go for it. It is rewarding and will help you in the short and long term.

I was establishing a network contact today. It is a stretch in that I am trying to go to a 4th degree.

My 1st degree knows his 1st degree ( my 2nd) knows someone (my 1st 2nd and his 1st 1st) at a company that I am interested in. Did you follow all that?

So my 1st send me a note about the introduction to his 1st about his 2nd. Then he tells me to be patient.

Here is the funny part;

I reply that I learned patience from my volunteer work performing underwater recovery.

He replies, “That’s funny it is a trait that I was born with”

I reply, ” Then I guess I have a weakness to talk about in an interview”

Okay! since I am loosing my mind about loosing my last 2 extensions my mind has warped!

So I am thinking about misleading job postings. You know the ones that get you excited them let you down.

For example here is the title of the job: Engagement Manager or even Sr. Engagement Manager

For us who know what that is it is a really good job and position.

Now here is the company: E-Harmony.com

Now just think of your own ad here! It could be hilarious!

Responsible for ensuring that our matches based on 39 points of compatibility get engaged to boost our standings in the matchmaking industry. Allowing us to grow market share and put Match.com out of business.
